The Teach English for Business Certificate course

This course covers key concepts, techniques and materials to prepare experienced teachers of English language to transfer their skills to teaching English for business. It includes:
  • the approaches and techniques needed to deal with specific business activities— telephoning, meetings, negotiations and presentations, written communications
  • the relationship of the trainer to the client, group dynamics and ways of interacting to provide constructive feedback and supportive instruction
  • the linguistic component of courses with emphasis on cross-cultural awareness and the social elements of business English training
  • preparing and evaluating materials
  • the needs of one-to-one students
  • business terminology

Certification and status of the course

Teachers who successfully complete a course receive an ACTDEC certificate and a detailed report from their tutor. However, for those who would like an additional external certificate we recommend that they take the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examination Board’s (LCCIEB) Further Certificate for Teachers of Business English (FTBE) examination. This is a two-and-a-half-hour written examination that can be taken on demand at any of the LCCIEB’s centres worldwide. The course will prepare you take this examination and to obtain further recognition of your competence.

Eligibility

Courses are open to English language teachers who have obtained a basic qualification in general English language teaching. Our courses are based on the assumption that the trainees are already familiar with general English teaching principles and methodology. The course is validated by ACTDEC as an add-on to the distance-learning TESOL courses offered by Training Link Online. New entrants to English language teaching wishing to specialize in business English can, therefore, complete their initial training with the appropriate TESOL course and then follow the TBE course.

Native and non-native speakers of English are eligible but non-native speakers must have a level of English that enables them to perform with credibility as language teachers.

Fees

The fee for the course is GB£230. This includes a non-refundable registration fee GB£30. The registration fee is required to enable us to make an initial assessment of each trainee who completes the first assignment. If, in the opinion of the tutor and academic director, a trainee does not demonstrate sufficient awareness of general English language teaching principles or does not have an acceptable level of English, he or she will be asked to leave the course and the balance of the fee will be refunded. The fee does not include the cost of LCCIEB examinations.
